Having enjoyed either a rest day or an easier ride around the beautiful Hualien, you’ll be itching to get back into the saddle. We continue south, through the stunning East Rift Valley, taking in some of the most untouched, ancient farming villages in the world.

The rest day was well needed, but now it’s time to crack on! Heading south out of Hualien, it won’t be long before we’ve left behind the city behind and find ourselves cruising through paddy fields, framed on both sides by mountain ranges.

The East Rift Valley, formed by glacial movements, conceals a host of aboriginal cultures and natural landscapes. The rice that is grown here, has made it the heartland of Taiwan for hundreds of years, feeding and supporting the sprawling industries on the other side of the central mountain range.

Having crossed the river and passed through Shoufeng, we will soon find ourselves in Fenglin township. This market town has supported the small local farming community for hundreds of years, and is a perfect place to stop for our morning coffee.

Further south, we follow the undulating road into the foothills of the eastern range, before descending back into the paddy fields around Guangfu for lunch. From here it is just a short ride further south to our rest point for the night, Ruisui.
