DAY 5 – LONG WAY DOWN
Having completed our monster climb in Day 4, now’s the time to reap the rewards. 80km of downhill through the world-famous Taroko gorge will prove to be a once in a lifetime cycling experience with Pedal Taiwan.
Your sore, tired, and the previous day was probably one of the most challenging you’ve ever ridden. What more could you want then, than coasting down 80km of the most spectacular scenery the world has to offer.
We wake up early in Lishan, known as ‘the sea of clouds’, to witness the spectacular sunrise coming up through the cloud layer in the valley below. After breakfast, a short drive will see us reach the highest point of our trip; the top of Taroko Gorge.
If winding down one of the most beautiful roads in the world wasn’t enough to satisfy you, then we will also be taking in Taiwanese spectaculars such as the stunning Eternal Spring Shrine; a gorgeous Buddhist temple built into the rock face above a fresh mountain spring.
At the bottom of Taroko we rejoin the ocean, where the cold mountain rivers turn the water a mesmerising turquoise. It is from this point in our journey that the waters will begin to resemble the island paradise that is synonymous with the Pacific.
A short ride along the coast, will see us reach the city of Hualien, our rest point for the night. The famous Hualien night market awaits, as well as a well earned rest day on Day 6.
